The wonderful Dr. Kim Mulvhill visited Glen Park Dental today to shoot a piece on bruxism, also known as tooth grinding.

Yanking out teeth with pliers; Not a great idea
According to Fox News, a British Gulf War veteran named Ian Boynton couldn't afford a private dentist, and yanked out 13 of his teeth with pliers when he couldn't find a dentist that took government insurance.
From the article:
"I've tried to get in at 30 dentists over the last eight years but have never been able to find one to take on government patients," he said.
He has only two teeth left in the top row of his mouth."
I kind of think this is baloney: he may have hit one roadblock in the government-assisted program and cried wolf and took overly-drastic measures.
I'm quite certain England's public health program is far more comprehensive and less costly as it is a socialized medicine system- low co-payments and much more available to them than in this country.
I can also bet that the guy broke off root tips in the jaw in some of the 13 teeth- thus setting himself up for future infections and greater trouble than he had to begin with.

How to fix Jon Heder's gummy smile
AOL's teen site is running a series called Worst Celebrity Smiles. Here's what they had to say about Jon Heder:
"Jon Heder is not a pretty man. No one can argue that. We loved him as 'Napoleon Dynamite' because the gummy smile went with the thick glasses and curly 'fro. But seeing Jon in real life, dressed up in a tuxedo on the red carpet, just doesn't really work for us. We need him back on the screen as Napoleon to truly appreciate these chompers."
That's a bit harsh, here's what we have to say:
Quite a few patients have come to us over the years to correct this kind of problem. What I see with his particular smile is: too much gum tissue shows when he smiles, his teeth are different sizes, not symmetrical and fairly dark for a young guy.
In simple cases- we just do Invisalign clear braces to straighten, gum lift with a diode laser and whiten with bleach solution.
With more complex cases, Invisalign may not be enough and traditional braces will be needed. We'd still probably need the gum lift and may the help of a Periodontist instead of the laser, but they can give us amazing results.
With REALLY complex cases- braces are needed then orthognathic surgery with an oral surgeon: something called a LeFort osteotomy is done to re-set the upper jaw into better (not so gummy) alignment with the lower jaw.

Mira Sorvino Breaks Her Teeth on NBC Miniseries: Literally
Let's get this going. Here is Mira Sorvino, an actress known for her roles in Quiz Show, Woody Allen's Mighty Aphrodite, and Norma Jean & Marilyn.
According to People Magazine, she recently broke her teeth while filming a miniseries for NBC. From the article:
"When we were doing the boat scene, we were supposed to be on the Turkish sea in a storm to end all storms," Sorvino, 41, told reporters at a Television Critics Association panel on Thursday. "A big wave came and washed my contacts out of my eyes, and a hook got caught, and it slams into my face and breaks five of my teeth. "
I definitely deal with broken teeth all of the time: it's more common than you might think in San Francisco. There are many ways it can play out depending on what is needed: extraction and implant placement, or re-implantation of the teeth, to simple repairs with bonding and veneers.
The most common reason I see with these cases is slip and fall accidents, but also a wide variety of sports incidents and motor vehicle accidents can get people into trouble too.
